WOD was organized in May 2005, in response to a need for educational programs and to encourage bird watchers in North Dakota to commit themselves to professional development and continuing education through membership in WOD.
WOD affiliated with National Birdwatching Organization in 2005. The National Organization of Birdwatchers offers a Certified Bird Watcher (CBW) program. Those who successfully complete the program receive the CBW credential. The National Organization of Birdwatchers may also offer an Advanced Certified Bird Watcher (ACBW) program focusing on specialized birding skills or regions. This could include advanced identification techniques, bird behavior analysis, or conservation efforts.
